Former employee of the Academic Sports Federation embezzled tens of thousands of euros
The Estonian Academic Sports Federation has filed a criminal complaint against a former employee for embezzling nearly 70,000 euros from the organization.
The Estonian Academic Sports Federation (EASL) has officially reported a former employee to the prosecutor's office over allegations of embezzlement amounting to roughly 70,000 euros. The allegations assert that between 2020 and 2026, the former staff member misappropriated funds related to event accommodations and ticketing, as well as fabricated records for referee payments. The total embezzled sum reportedly hovers around 70,000 euros, prompting the EASL to take legal action to recover the losses.
The organization suspected funding irregularities earlier this year, leading to an internal investigation which confirmed that the former employee had systematically provided incorrect information to management over a span of seven years, making the fraud possible. The EASL emphasized their commitment to uncovering the complete extent of these financial discrepancies through the ensuing criminal proceedings, stating that detailed circumstances and damage evaluations would be determined during this investigation.
In light of these revelations, the EASL has initiated a comprehensive review of its internal processes and procedures to identify any additional breaches that might have occurred. The leadership expressed their profound disappointment, stressing that the integrity of the academic community has been severely undermined by this betrayal of trust. Through this investigative work, the federation aims to restore confidence among its members and the broader public regarding its operational transparency and accountability.
