Someone embezzled over 20,000 euros from students in Tampere - chairperson: 'The night was spent crying'
The ITU student organization at Tampere University is in financial distress after over 20,000 euros were embezzled, leading to investigations and the cancellation of planned events.
The student organization for early childhood educators at Tampere University, known as ITU ry, is facing severe financial hardship following the embezzlement of over 20,000 euros late last year. The organization announced that the police are currently investigating the incident, classified as a serious embezzlement case. Chairperson Lotta Kivistö expressed the emotional toll of the incident, stating that the shock left them devastated, and the first night was particularly difficult for her, filled with tears.
In light of the financial blow, ITU has begun seeking ways to replenish its empty bank account, with substantial outstanding bills nearing approximately 10,000 euros. To manage this situation, they have received support from the Student Association of Future Educators (SOOL), which has helped them assess their financial standing and prioritize payments to creditors. Kivistö noted that they have successfully negotiated with creditors to arrange payment times, demonstrating a collaborative effort to recover from the financial crisis.
The organization also had to abandon their plans for their 70th anniversary celebration this year, for which they had been saving for an extended period and were already deep into the organization process. Kivistö mentioned that they had even finalized a venue, illustrating how the embezzlement has not only affected their finances but also their ability to celebrate a significant milestone in their history, further emphasizing the impact of this crime on the student community.
