AL: Finnish junior team penalizes children for tardiness
A junior soccer team in Valkeakoski, Finland fines players for tardiness and inadequate gear, sparking debate among parents.
A youth soccer team in Valkeakoski, Finland, has implemented a fine system for players aged 15-16 who arrive late to practice or lack proper training gear. According to local news outlet Aamulehti, this new regulation has stirred confusion and mixed reactions among some of the players' parents. The fines were introduced this winter season and aim to instill discipline and responsibility among young athletes.
The fines range from 5 to 10 euros and were initiated at the suggestion of the teamโs players, according to head coach Matti Salakka. The collected fines create a fund that will be used for end-of-season celebrations, directly benefiting all team members. Salakka highlights that this system was designed not only to address tardiness but also to encourage players to take responsibility for their actions and commitments in sports.
Despite some concerns from parents, there have also been positive responses endorsing the idea of teaching young athletes about accountability. Salakka reports that the fund has accumulated around forty euros over the past five months, and several parents have expressed appreciation for the initiative's aim to foster a sense of responsibility in their children.
