AL: Popular café closes in Tampere – The reason is a personal tragedy
A popular café in Tampere is set to close due to the personal tragedy of its owner, Kimmo Alarotu, who passed away recently.
The Bakery Cafe, located in central Tampere, will close its doors at the end of March after the untimely death of its owner and CEO, Kimmo Alarotu, who suffered a sudden medical emergency in the fall of 2025. The café, which opened in 2016 and became a beloved establishment, is being forced to close as its operations became too burdensome for Alarotu's spouse, Ilkka Ruotsalainen, following his passing. Ruotsalainen had also played a significant role in the operations of both the café and Hair Garage, a hair salon established in 1993, which has since been sold.
Ruotsalainen expressed a mix of sadness and relief over the closure, emphasizing that the decision was a direct result of their personal tragedy. He noted the emotional toll that managing both the café and a separate makeup business after Alarotu's death imposed on him. The Bakery Cafe staff took to social media to thank the customers for their years of support, highlighting the strong community connection that the café had established over the years.
In light of the closure, it has been announced that a new business will be taking over the café’s premises in the spring, indicating a continuation of commerce in that location despite the loss of a cherished local spot.
