Athens Municipality: The municipal transport "ATHENS MOVE" is coming with 17 electric buses on 4 lines
Athens is set to launch a new municipal transport system called 'ATHENS MOVE,' featuring 17 electric buses on four lines designed to improve local mobility.
A new era is beginning for citizen mobility in Athens with the introduction of four new municipal transport lines. This new network, developed by the Municipality of Athens, arose following the findings of a transport study which identified significant accessibility shortcomings, a high reliance on polluting private vehicles, and increased transportation costs in certain city areas. The transport study received approval from OASA (Athens Urban Transport Organization) and a proposal was made to the Government's Deputy Presidency, allowing the initiative to be funded by the Social Climate Fund.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas stated, 'We are taking another step towards establishing municipal transport in Athens. We are creating a modern and complementary mobility system for every citizen of Athens, alleviating traffic congestion.' The four new lines will cover a total length of 40 kilometers, addressing gaps in local transportation services. Moreover, 17 electric buses will operate to serve the public without passing through certain congested areas, promoting eco-friendly transportation and enhancing the overall public transport experience in Athens.
This initiative is not only expected to ease traffic congestion but also encourages the use of public transport by providing accessible and efficient mobility options for locals. The focus on electric buses aligns with broader environmental goals, aiming to reduce pollution and contribute to a more sustainable urban environment. The implementation of the 'ATHENS MOVE' project represents a significant step forward in improving urban transport infrastructure and reflects the municipality's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
