English Premier League footballer Cirkins committed to play for the Latvian national team
Latvian footballer Denniss Cirkins, previously part of England's youth teams, is set to join the national team ahead of crucial UEFA Nations League matches this March.
The head coach of the Latvian national football team, Paolo Nikolato, has announced the selection of players for the upcoming training camp in March, which includes two UEFA Nations League playoff matches against Gibraltar on March 26 and March 31 at the Skonto Stadium in Riga. The results of these matches will determine whether Latvia will compete in League C or D of the tournament depending on the outcome of the two-leg playoff.
This training camp will feature 27 players, including the return of midfielder Eduards Emsis after a two-year absence and striker Roberts Uldriķis, who is back after recovering from a long-term injury. Notably, captain Kristers Tobers and striker Raimonds Krollis will be unavailable for selection due to health issues. The inclusion of Cirkins, who has previously played for various England youth teams and is currently with Sunderland in the Premier League, marks an important step as he officially commits to representing Latvia on the international stage.
Cirkins' participation is seen as a significant boost for the Latvian team, offering them a mix of youth and talent as they prepare for these essential matches that could reshape their standing in international competition. His background in the English league system may provide unique insights and techniques beneficial for the team as they aim for success in the upcoming playoffs, making him a player to watch in the coming months.
