"Cynically belittled the ski center employee, incited hatred": trial will take place over racist assault in Vilnius
A trial is set to begin in Vilnius concerning a racist attack involving a 46-year-old woman of Belgian and Jamaican nationality, who allegedly incited hatred against ski center employees.
The Vilnius District Prosecutor's office has completed an investigation and has transferred a case to court against a 46-year-old woman of dual Belgian and Jamaican citizenship for public order offenses and incitement against a group of people based on their sex, race, and skin color. This follows an incident at the "Liepkalnis" ski center in February of the previous year, where the woman was involved in a conflict concerning the prices of ski lift tickets and refunds.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused acted aggressively, trying to enter staff areas, shouting at employees, and ignoring their requests to calm down. She allegedly mocked and belittled the ski center staff in a cynical manner while inciting hatred based on their race, gender, and skin color. Furthermore, the accused filmed her actions and comments using her mobile phone, highlighting her confrontational behavior.
The escalation of the situation only ceased when the police arrived at the scene. The upcoming trial underscores the serious issue of racial hatred and public order violations in Lithuania, following wider discussions on such incidents in the country. This case could set a precedent for how similar incidents are handled legally and socially in the future, shedding light on the ongoing challenges related to racism and discrimination in Lithuanian society.
