Good News for Bihar! Electricity tariffs will not increase... Relief for 22.2 million people
Bihar's electricity consumers will not see an increase in tariffs for the financial year 2026-27, providing significant relief for 22.2 million residents.
Consumers in Bihar received a significant relief as the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) confirmed that no increase in electricity tariffs will occur for the financial year 2026-27. This decision affects about 22.2 million consumers across the state, ensuring that their financial burden won't increase in terms of electricity costs. The BERC rejected a proposal from distribution companies (discoms) to raise tariffs by 35 paise per unit, demonstrating the commission's commitment to supporting consumers against rising electricity costs.
The decision, taken by the commission's chairperson Amir Subhani and members Parshuram Singh Yadav and Arun Kumar Sinha, will maintain the existing tariff rates, which will remain effective from April 1, 2026, until further notice. The commission emphasized the importance of considering the financial strain on consumers when rejecting the tariff hike proposal. It further approved aggregate revenue requirements (ARR) of Rs 16,555.69 crores for NBPDCL and Rs 18,908.97 crores for SBPDCL, both of which showcased revenue surpluses, negating the need for any tariff increases.
Additionally, the commission's decision to assess the tariff structure's effectiveness for various consumer categories, including urban domestic and commercial users, resulted in benefits for approximately 2.7 million consumers due to slab merging. This restructuring aims to enhance the efficiency of the electricity distribution system while relieving users from further financial stress, highlighting BERC's proactive approach towards consumer welfare in Bihar.
