Gabrielė, who gave birth to two premature babies: 'This experience has transformed me into a different person'

Gabrielė reflects on her transformative journey of giving birth to her son Gabriel, a premature baby, and the challenges they faced together.

Gabrielė's journey to motherhood began with the birth of her son, Gabriel, who arrived in the world after a long and anxious pregnancy marked by severe toxicosis and the constant threat of miscarriage and premature birth. Born at 34 weeks, he weighed just 2300 grams and measured 46 centimeters, experiencing a delicate early life yet managing to breathe and feed independently. Gabrielė recalls her son being very fragile during those initial days, which compounded her fears as a new mother.

After bringing Gabriel home, the first months were filled with careful monitoring of his weight and health, underscored by a harrowing experience when he needed surgery for a hernia just three weeks after birth. While this condition is common among premature infants, it still posed a significant scare for Gabrielė, especially as boys are more often affected. Despite these early health challenges, Gabriel thrived, showing incredible resilience as he grew day by day, maturing into a lively nine-year-old third grader who exemplifies that a fragile beginning does not determine one's future strength.

Gabrielė's experience has led to a personal transformation, shaping her perspectives on motherhood and resilience. The Lithuanian healthcare system has also been benefiting from new global innovations aimed at enhancing the care of premature newborns, providing further hope and support for families facing similar challenges. This story highlights the critical importance of monitoring, support systems, and advances in neonatal care for premature infants and their parents.
