Two Missing Muslim Sisters Returned with Hindu Youths, Said - We Got Married

Two cousins from Chhatarpur district, missing since February 9, returned to the police station confirming their marriage with Hindu partners after eloping.

In a notable incident from the town of Naogao in Chhatarpur district, two Muslim cousins, Alina and Shaleena, who were reported missing since February 9, have resurfaced with their Hindu partners, confirming that they had married in a temple ceremony on February 20. The two young women, who have been in love with their respective partners for about seven years, chose to elope and embrace Hindu customs, leading to Shaleena changing her name to Sanvi Arya after their marriage.

The case came to light when the sisters arrived at the Naogao police station, where they declared themselves to be adults and expressed their desire to remain with their husbands. This confrontation followed the filing of a missing persons report by their family, prompting police to locate the women and inform their relatives of their return. Despite emotional discussions between the sisters and their families at the police station, Alina and Shaleena maintained their stance, refusing to return home and affirming their autonomy over their marital choices.

TI Valmiki Choubey noted that the police respected the women's declarations as legal adults and did not perceive any form of coercion in their testimonies. This incident raises questions about love across cultural and religious boundaries and highlights the challenges faced by interfaith couples in India. The willingness of the young women to convert to Hinduism and marry outside their community could have significant social implications as it touches upon issues of identity, family honor, and acceptance in contemporary Indian society.
