Hindu girl missing from Saharanpur recovered after 7 days, accused Azam arrested
A Hindu girl who went missing from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has been safely recovered, and the accused has been arrested following allegations of kidnapping.
In a concerning incident from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu girl who had been reported missing has been successfully located by the police after a week of extensive searching. Utilizing technical surveillance, law enforcement traced the whereabouts of the girl to Prayagraj. Following her father’s complaint on February 24, which implicated a local Muslim youth named Azam in her kidnapping, authorities took swift action. Given the seriousness of the allegations and claims regarding the girl’s minor status, the police have lodged multiple serious charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and have detained Azam for judicial custody.
The disappearance of the girl had escalated tensions in the western part of Uttar Pradesh, with various Hindu organizations claiming that the incident was connected to 'love jihad,' which sparked significant civil unrest. For over a week, there were protests and demonstrations in the area, with highways blocked and a call for mahapanchayats (community gatherings) in opposition to the alleged crime. Political figures from the BJP, including Sangeet Som and MLA Nand Kishore Gurjar, prompted the local administration to bolster security in the village by deploying a large police force along with the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), aiming to maintain peace amid rising tensions.
In recognition of the efforts to locate the girl, the police had announced a reward of 50,000 INR for information leading to her recovery. As the situation continues to unfold, the girl is currently placed in a shelter for women, where she will be presented in court to provide her statements regarding the circumstances surrounding her abduction. This incident highlights the ongoing societal tensions surrounding interfaith relationships in India and raises questions about the safety and protection of minors in such contexts.
