Trade unions raise demands to the ministry: seeking essential changes in the education system
Trade unions in Lithuania are calling for urgent reforms in the education sector, highlighting issues such as teacher safety and the declining quality of education.
In February of this year, various trade union organizations convened a press conference to address the deteriorating condition of the Lithuanian education system. They underscored the alarming levels of teacher safety concerns and the increased difficulty in attracting new professionals to the field. Aldona Kindurienė, the chairwoman of the Education and Science Trade Union "Solidarity," stated that the education system is at a critical tipping point, where mere declarations of intent are no longer sufficient. Concrete political solutions and accountability for their implementation are essential.
The unions have specifically pointed out that teachers often find themselves alone in schools, lacking adequate protection and means to defend themselves. The situation has been exacerbated by a rise in unfounded complaints, insufficient psychological support, and a legal framework that does not always lead to fair outcomes. Even when a dismissal is proven unjustified, teachers frequently do not return to their positions. This troubling trend highlights the urgent need for reforms to enhance both teacher security and the overall educational environment.
One case exemplifying the deteriorating educational conditions is that of Meilė Platūkienė, an ethics teacher at the Alytus Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas Gymnasium. This situation serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing challenges and demonstrates the need for immediate attention to the issues faced by educators in Lithuania, as maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment is crucial for both teachers and students alike.
