The evacuees are allowed to go home

Evacuees from the Sugartop area in Ålesund can return home after the local police declare the fire under control.

The police in Ålesund, Norway, announced on Thursday morning that around 300 individuals evacuated due to a fire in the Sugartop area can now return home. The evacuation had been initiated on Tuesday afternoon as a precaution against the fire potentially spreading to houses, particularly on the southern side of the mountain. Firefighters have reported that they have gained control over the situation and are closely monitoring it to ensure safety for the returning residents.

Although residents are allowed to return home, there is still a travel and stay ban in place for certain areas until 14:00 tomorrow. This restriction covers the Sugartop area, Tueneset, Hessa, and Skarbøvik, affecting both terrain and areas outside roads and housing. The police are enforcing these restrictions to safeguard both residents and emergency personnel while the situation remains volatile.

The incident highlights the continual challenges faced by communities dealing with natural disasters like wildfires, and the importance of effective emergency response strategies. Additionally, as the evacuation order is lifted, local officials will likely continue to monitor the area for any residual risks associated with lingering fire threats, maintaining communication with residents regarding safety measures.
