Customs revealed: Drugs sent to Finland from Italy as express freight shipments

Finnish Customs has uncovered a drug smuggling operation involving eight serious narcotics offenses, where cannabis and cocaine were sent from Italy to Finland via express shipments.

Finnish Customs (Tulli) has revealed the uncovering of an extensive drug trafficking scheme linked to Italy, which has raised significant alarms regarding narcotic importation methods into Finland. The operation involved eight separate serious drug offenses, with cannabis (hashish) and cocaine being imported through express parcel services. The illicit shipments were detected during inspections carried out in Vantaa and Pirkkala in January, alongside deliveries to other Finnish cities such as Turku and Tampere.

The preliminary investigation by Customs indicates a substantial amount of narcotics was intercepted, including over 13 kilograms of cocaine and up to 50 kilograms of various forms of cannabis, including hashish and marijuana. These shipments had occurred between December of the previous year and January of the current year, highlighting a focused effort in smuggling drugs during the holiday season. Out of the eight shipments, five were confiscated by authorities, notifying the seriousness of this operation. The estimated street value of these drugs in Finland exceeds two million euros, showcasing the potential social impact of this crime.

In a move to address these offenses, Finnish Customs has detained two foreign nationals suspected of being involved in this drug smuggling operation in Tampere. This case illustrates the ongoing challenges faced by Finnish authorities in controlling drug trafficking, emphasizing the need for international cooperation in tackling such crimes. As express shipping continues to be exploited for illegal activities, this incident underscores the importance of stringent customs checks and collaborative efforts to better combat drug-related crimes in Finland.
