Public Transport: Strike in Munich: These Buses and Subways Still Operate

A strike by the Verdi union is disrupting public transport in Munich, with reduced service on buses and subways despite efforts by the Munich transport authority to maintain some operations.

On Thursday, public transportation in Munich faced significant disruptions due to a warning strike organized by the Verdi union. This strike commenced at the start of the day and is scheduled to continue until operational hours resume on Friday morning. The transportation authority, Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG), is implementing a contingency plan to keep some bus and tram services running, despite the reduced schedules. A rally for striking workers is planned for 1:30 PM at Marienplatz, highlighting the solidarity among the workers and the significance of their demands.

Prior to this Thursday's strike, there was a brief work stoppage on Wednesday which began at 11 AM. The current situation escalates the ongoing labor conflict in the transport sector, with the union pushing for better working conditions and wages. MVG has managed to maintain a limited number of bus routes across the city, although with decreased frequency. The tram lines, notably line 20, are operational every ten minutes, while the 25 line runs every twenty minutes, providing minimal relief for commuters.

Significantly, the subway services are severely affected, with operations limited to just one section of the line between Münchner Freiheit and Sendlinger Tor, while all other sections remain closed. This limited service highlights the impact of the strike on daily commuters who rely on public transport for their journey in and around Munich. The ongoing labor dispute reflects broader challenges in the public transport sector, likely affecting future negotiations between labor unions and employers.
