Public Transport: Strike in Munich Begins – These Buses and Subways Are Still Running

A strike organized by the Verdi union in Munich has begun, affecting local public transportation, although some services remain operational.

The Verdi union has initiated a strike in Munich's public transport system, commencing at 11 AM on Wednesday and continuing all day on Thursday, March 19. The Munich Transport Company (MVG) reports that measures are already being taken to mitigate disruptions from the strike. Buses, trams, and subways are gradually being withdrawn to avoid total stoppage at the outset of the strike. Starting at 11 AM, only essential services will operate, following a previous pattern observed during earlier strikes.

According to the MVG, while many services will be reduced, they are ensuring the basic supply of public transport throughout the city. More than half of the buses will remain operational, albeit with less frequent service. Notably, tram line 20, which sees high demand, is still running. The MVG has indicated that additional services may resume depending on personnel availability, specifically mentioning tram line 25 may operate under certain conditions.

As the strike progresses, it significantly impacts daily commuters and public transport users in Munich. The situation underscores ongoing tensions between transport workers and management over working conditions and compensation, reflecting broader labor disputes across Germany. The precautionary measures by the MVG aim to maintain at least a minimum level of service, highlighting the importance of public transport in urban mobility, especially amidst ongoing strikes in various sectors.
