Former Teacher in Hokkaido Receives Suspended Sentence for Illegal Filming Incident

A former middle school teacher in Chitose, Hokkaido, received a suspended prison sentence for filming teenage girls changing clothes, highlighting serious abuses of trust in educational environments.

A former teacher from Chitose, Hokkaido, was sentenced on the 19th by the Nagoya District Court to three years in prison, suspended for five years, for violations of child prostitution and pornography laws. The case involved the teacher filming five girls, aged 12 to 13, while they were changing clothes using a pen-shaped camera, as well as unlawfully entering a women's restroom for the purpose of filming. The presiding judge, Megumi Murase, emphasized the violation of trust inherent in the teacher's misconduct, stating that schools should be safe environments for students.

During the period from September 2023 to July 2025, the teacher was reported to have used the hidden camera to capture images of the victims. While he was found to have compensated some of the victims, the court ultimately decided on a suspended sentence, emphasizing this as a mitigating factor in the decision. Notably, another charge regarding the defendant's alleged sharing of footage in a group chat was not prosecuted, raising questions about accountability in cases of such serious allegations.

Due to considerations for the victims, the defendant's name was kept anonymous in the digital version of the article, indicating sensitivity towards the people affected by the crime. This case serves as a troubling reminder of the vulnerabilities within educational contexts and the need for vigilant oversight to prevent further abuses of power by individuals in positions of trust.
