Snack and ice cream prices will drop by 100 to 400 won... Lotte, Haitai, Binggrae, Orion, and Samlip
South Korean food manufacturers are reducing the prices of snacks and ice cream due to decreased raw material costs and government efforts to stabilize prices.
In a move to alleviate financial burdens on consumers, South Korean companies including Lotte, Haitai, Binggrae, Orion, and Samlip have announced reductions in the prices of various snack and ice cream products by 100 to 400 won, effective from April. This decision follows a drop in the costs of raw materials like flour and sugar, which are essential for manufacturing these goods, as well as the government's ongoing efforts to stabilize the cost of living amid rising inflation.
Specifically, Lotte Wellfood will cut prices of nine products, including candies and snacks, by an average of 4.7%, with some items seeing reductions up to 20%. For instance, the popular 'Mom's Hand Pie' will see a decrease of 2.9%, while ice cream items like 'Soda Flavor' will be reduced by 20%. Other companies such as Orion and Samlip are also following suit, dropping prices by an average of 5% on various products, indicating a broader trend in the food industry to make essential items more affordable for consumers.
This price-cutting initiative may also be a response to recent scrutiny from the Fair Trade Commission regarding potential collusion among sugar and flour manufacturers, prompting these companies to adjust their pricing strategies. Last week, four major ramen manufacturers also announced similar price reductions ranging from 4.6% to 14.6%, showcasing a wider industry shift aimed at providing relief to consumers amidst economic pressures. Overall, these collective actions by major food manufacturers signal a proactive approach to address rising living costs and reinforce positive consumer sentiment in the market.
