President Yoon: To Enhance Employment Flexibility, We Must Create Acceptable Conditions for Workers

President Yoon emphasized the need to create conditions that allow workers to accept employment flexibility that companies desire during a labor policy discussion.

On March 19, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol remarked on the necessity of creating conditions in which workers can accept the employment flexibility that companies seek. During a discussion at the inaugural meeting of the Economic, Social and Labor Commission, the President noted that while companies highlight the rigidity of employment, workers often view layoffs as a dire threat and hold firm on job security. This sentiment underscores the tension between employers’ demands for more flexible labor and employees’ desire for stable work environments.

President Yoon acknowledged that both sides have valid concerns, suggesting that for progress to be made, it is essential to create scenarios where workers feel secure enough to concede to some level of flexibility. He pointed out that demanding sacrifices from workers without having robust protections and social safety nets in place is not reasonable. He stressed that a balance must be struck, with policies ensuring that workers are not put in precarious positions that equate layoffs with life-altering consequences.

In his address, President Yoon further argued that while total agreement among all stakeholders may be unattainable, it is vital for key players to see the rationale behind such policies. He indicated that the approach should not result in unilateral sacrifices by already vulnerable groups, but rather lead to a framework where flexibility is seen as fair and just, ultimately promoting a more equitable labor environment.
