7 out of 10 families plan to go into debt to cover tuition, school supplies, and uniforms

Many Ecuadorian families are planning to take on debt this upcoming school year to afford educational expenses like tuition and uniforms, potentially exacerbating their existing financial burdens.

As the school year approaches in Ecuador's coastal regions and the Galapagos Islands, families are facing increased financial pressure to purchase school supplies, uniforms, and pay for tuition. According to a recent survey by Defensa Deudores Ecuador, 70% of families are considering taking on debt to manage these essential expenses. This situation is compounded by existing debts, as many parents are already struggling to balance multiple financial obligations at once.

César Coronel Garcés, a lawyer from Defensa Deudores Ecuador, highlights that many parents are relying on their 'decimo cuarto sueldo,' or fourteenth salary, to cover these educational costs. This financial strategy, however, coincides with the repayment periods for Christmas purchases made on credit, leading to significant financial strain for families. The overlapping due dates for these various financial commitments create a precarious situation for many households as they strive to meet their obligations.

The organization warns that this trend of increased borrowing could lead to a rise in defaults among families in the coming months, especially as the due dates for these debts approach. The implications of this situation extend beyond immediate financial stress, hinting at broader economic challenges for families as they struggle to balance educational expenses with existing financial commitments, which could have lasting consequences on their financial health and stability.
