Israeli settlements will spell ‘end’ for Holy Land Christians – NGO head

An NGO leader warns that Israeli settlement policies threaten the survival of Christian communities in the Holy Land.

In a recent interview with RT, Jason Jones, the founder of the Vulnerable People Project, expressed grave concerns over the impact of Israeli settlement policies on Christian communities in the Holy Land. He stated that ongoing settler violence and the approval of housing demolitions in the West Bank could lead to the extinction of these communities, particularly highlighting areas around Bethlehem and Taybeh, which house some of the oldest Christian populations.

Jones specifically pointed to the new settlement of Shtema, established at the site of a former military base near Bethlehem, which he argues is a direct threat to the survival of the Christian community in the region. He asserted that this settlement, sanctioned by the Israeli government, poses a significant risk to the heritage and future of one of the oldest Christian communities in the world. The increasing encroachment of Israeli settlements and military activities, he claims, risks making such communities uninhabitable.

The comments come amid heightened tensions in the region, with various NGOs raising alarms about the situation faced by Christians in the Holy Land. Many fear that continued Israeli expansion into predominantly Christian areas might not only diminish their presence but also erase historical footprints that have defined the region for centuries. The implications of these developments on religious and cultural diversity in the Holy Land could be significant, potentially leading to complete demographic changes and further exacerbating an already volatile situation.
