Discussion on the Imperial Household Law Among Ruling and Opposition Parties to Resume in April; Prime Minister Aims for Amendment During Current Session

Discussions among ruling and opposition parties in Japan regarding amendments to the Imperial Household Law are set to resume as early as April, with the Prime Minister expressing intent to achieve changes during the current parliamentary session.

On April 18, leaders of both houses of Japan's Diet confirmed plans to resume discussions on the Imperial Household Law, critical for ensuring stable succession to the throne. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed her commitment to amending the law within the current parliamentary session, stating that the ruling party would accelerate discussions following the passage of the new budget proposal currently under deliberation in the House of Councillors. The meeting included key figures from both the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party, focusing on the need for broad consensus on this sensitive issue.

Key points of discussion around the law revision have centered on strategies to stabilize imperial succession, which had been an ongoing concern for lawmakers since early 2024. Participants agreed to host a full assembly involving various parties, including those who have not voiced opinions yet, like the Moderate and Team Future. Two main proposals currently under consideration from the government's expert meeting were to maintain the imperial status of female royals after marriage and to adopt male heirs from former imperial family branches to bolster the number of royal family members. This collaboration aims to address demographic challenges faced by the imperial family.

Despite efforts for cooperation, the discussions have not produced a unified stance between the ruling and opposition parties. Additional meetings are planned to foster dialogue and gather input from a wider range of political factions, indicating that while progress is being pursued, consensus building will be essential in navigating the complexities of amending the Imperial Household Law.
