Aim to Amend the Imperial Household Law in a Special Session of the Diet: LDP's Kobayashi

The head of the LDP's Policy Research Council, Takayuki Kobayashi, announced plans to amend the Imperial Household Law in an ongoing special session of the Diet to ensure stable imperial succession.

In a press conference on the 5th, Takayuki Kobayashi, the chair of the Liberal Democratic Party's Policy Research Council, discussed the party's intention to push for amendments to the Imperial Household Law during the ongoing special session of the National Diet. This initiative comes amidst continued discussions between ruling and opposition parties, aimed at finding a 'consensus of the legislative body' to accelerate the legislative process regarding stable imperial succession.

Kobayashi referenced the coalition agreement between the LDP and the Japan Innovation Party, which explicitly mentions the need to revise the Imperial Household Law, stressing that ensuring a sufficient number of imperial family members is an urgent issue. He pointed out the necessity for creating opportunities for various parliamentary factions to express their opinions and highlighted the importance of rapidly advancing discussions on this matter.

Additionally, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has shown her commitment to this issue, expressing hopes that discussions regarding the nature of stable imperial succession will deepen during the current Diet session. This indicates a broader political intent to address the challenges surrounding Japan's imperial institution, signaling potential legislative changes that could have significant implications for its future structure and stability.
