Lagos warns illegal parking operators in Computer Village, vows crackdown
The Lagos State Parking Authority has issued a warning to individuals engaging in illegal parking in Computer Village, threatening prosecution for extortion practices.
The Lagos State Parking Authority has taken a firm stand against illegal parking operations in Computer Village, a bustling commercial area in Ikeja. The agency disclosed that it has identified a ring of fraudsters collaborating with touts to extract unauthorized parking fees from unsuspecting motorists. These illegal operators reportedly charge drivers as much as ₦1,000 for parking, undermining the legal parking framework in the area.
Adebisi Adelabu, the General Manager of LASPA, highlighted the detrimental effects of these practices, explaining that motorists not only pay unauthorized fees but may also face additional challenges when enforcement teams target improperly parked vehicles. These penalties can include the clamping of vehicles, removal of number plates, or towing, leading to substantial financial losses for drivers. This crackdown aims to protect the rights of motorists from extortion and restore proper regulation of parking operations.
Furthermore, Adelabu emphasized that managing parking operations in the area is not under the purview of any unofficial groups nor the Lagos Central Business District, which should serve to clarify the legal boundaries of parking enforcement in Computer Village. The agency's commitment to criminal prosecution for offenders underlines the importance of maintaining order and transparency in urban traffic management as the city continues to grow and grapple with rising challenges.
