Swarm of bees kills dog and leaves man injured with 30 stings in Sarapuí

A swarm of bees killed a dog and injured a man in Sarapuí, Brazil, with the man receiving 30 stings before being treated.

On the morning of Wednesday, the 18th, a swarm of bees led to the tragic death of a dog and left a 55-year-old man injured in Sarapuí, a district within São Paulo state. The local Civil Defense reported that the man suffered approximately 30 bee stings but was treated at the scene and is in stable condition. This incident highlights the increasing dangers associated with bee swarms, particularly during spring and summer when their reproduction peaks.

In addition to the incident involving the dog and the injured man, the Civil Defense noted that they received two other calls on the same day regarding potential bee swarms in different areas of the district. Fortunately, these calls did not result in any attacks, but they underscore the need for vigilance during this time of year. Bee swarming is a natural reproductive process where a queen and a number of worker bees leave their hive to establish a new colony, and this behavior is more prevalent in the warmer months.

The biólogo Thiago Luiz Parra de Godoi explained that the spring and summer seasons are crucial for bee reproduction and consequently, the risk of encountering swarms increases. Local residents and authorities must be aware of this phenomenon and prepared for any potential dangers that arise from increased bee activity, particularly as these events can lead to serious injuries or even fatalities if not handled properly.
