TRAGIC STATISTICS: None of the fishermen who drowned this year due to weak ice were using safety equipment

This year, six fishermen have drowned in Estonia as weak ice conditions worsened, all of whom were lacking safety equipment.

This year, particularly during March, the weak and unstable ice conditions led to the tragic drowning of six fishermen in Estonia. Just before March 15, there had been no reported drownings, but the rapid change in ice conditions resulted in multiple fatalities within days. Notably, three of these drownings occurred at the Tammemäe quarry near Männikul, highlighting the dangers posed by the rapidly deteriorating ice.

Experts from the Rescue Board's Prevention Department, especially Tuuli Taavet, point out a shocking statistic: none of the individuals who drowned were equipped with proper safety gear. Taavet has expressed concerns over this troubling trend, which indicates a dangerous level of recklessness and lack of awareness among fishermen about ice conditions and safety protocols.

In light of these incidents and the increasingly hazardous ice conditions, the Estonian authorities enforced a nationwide ban on accessing ice on inland waters starting March 17. Rescue services are actively monitoring compliance with this directive near popular fishing spots as they anticipate the complete melting of the ice. This preventive measure is crucial to ensure the safety of individuals engaging in outdoor activities during the changing seasons.
