Due to rising temperatures, the ice conditions on the Emajõgi river in Tartu have become perilous, prompting the local rescue service to issue warnings against crossing the river. This dangerous situation was highlighted by an incident on Friday near the Kaarsilla bridge, where an experienced rescuer fell through the ice while conducting a routine check, struggling against the strong currents beneath. After a long and harsh winter that had initially frozen the river solid, the rapid temperature increase has rendered the ice unstable and hazardous.

For almost two months, the frozen Emajõgi river provided local residents and visitors with recreational opportunities, including the chance for skating. However, the recent shift from sub-zero temperatures to warm weather has drastically changed the ice conditions, raising serious safety concerns. Arvi Uustalu, head of the preventive bureau at the South Rescue Center, emphasized the importance of using bridges for crossing the river and recommended avoiding the ice altogether, suggesting that designated skating rinks on solid ground are the safest option.

As the weather continues to fluctuate, the local authorities have underscored the escalating risks associated with the warming temperatures and thinning ice. With the advent of spring approaching, it remains crucial for the community to heed official warnings and prioritize safety over recreation now that conditions have become increasingly treacherous.
