Espoo Company Learned a Harsh Lesson Worth Tens of Millions
Finnish game developer Remedy announced it will cease support for its online game FBC: Firebreak following disappointing player retention despite an initial surge in players.
Finnish game developer Remedy Entertainment has made the decision to stop supporting its online game FBC: Firebreak, which launched in June 2025 at a development cost of approximately 30 million euros. Despite an impressive launch that attracted one million players in the first week, the game failed to maintain engagement, leading to a sharp decline in player numbers shortly after release. The server for the game will remain operational for several years, allowing players to continue their experience, albeit with a significant drop in the user base.
To extend the game's lifespan, Remedy introduced a 'friend pass' feature, enabling players to enjoy FBC: Firebreak for free when playing with a friend who has purchased the game. This move indicates the company's recognition of the game's challenges and their commitment to providing ongoing support for any remaining players. The game's final major update was released on March 17, which included new areas and various gameplay adjustments, along with a permanent price drop of 20 euros.
The game's struggles on platforms like Steam, where it recorded a peak of only 1,992 concurrent players, suggest a broader issue in the competitive gaming market. This disappointing performance serves as a cautionary tale for developers regarding the unpredictability of player retention and the financial risks involved in launching large-scale online games. The situation highlights the importance of ongoing engagement strategies and adapting to players' needs to ensure long-term success within the industry.
