It is possible to do top-notch science in Slovakia, says French chemist Monfort, who studies wastewater treatment

French chemist Olivier Monfort discusses his research on the use of nanomaterials for wastewater treatment and his experiences living and working in Slovakia.

Olivier Monfort, a French chemist, is exploring the use of nanomaterials, specifically MXenes, for improving wastewater treatment processes. In a recent interview, Monfort highlighted the versatility of these materials, stating that they can be used for wastewater treatment almost anywhere. He believes that technological advances in materials science can significantly enhance environmental cleanup efforts.

Originally from Vannes in Brittany, France, Monfort first encountered Slovakia during a cultural festival aimed at youth two decades ago. Having completed his master's and doctoral studies in chemistry at Comenius University in Bratislava, he briefly returned to France before coming back to Slovakia in 2020. His decision to return was influenced by the opportunities he found in Slovakia to fully utilize his expertise in chemistry. Currently, Monfort is the head of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at Comenius University in Bratislava.

During his time in Slovakia, Monfort has also faced language barriers but actively worked to improve his Slovak skills. He took language courses and encouraged his friends to converse in Slovak to aid his learning. Monfort's journey has not only contributed to his personal growth but also showcases Slovakia as a viable place for conducting high-level scientific research, aligning with his vision of enhancing environmental sustainability through innovative science.
