São José saves R$ 2.8 million with clean energy at the landfill
São José dos Campos has saved nearly R$ 2.8 million in electricity costs by generating clean energy from its landfill, significantly reducing methane emissions.
São José dos Campos, recognized for its intelligent, resilient, and sustainable urban planning, has achieved substantial savings of R$ 2.798 million in electricity expenses for the year 2025. This impressive figure represents a 40% reduction in the municipality's electricity costs, allowing for approximately R$ 233,000 per month to be redirected from energy company payments to other priority areas within the city. The initiative reinforces the city’s commitment to efficiency and sustainability, as it simultaneously addresses economic and environmental concerns.
The city's energy generation unit, managed by Urbam at the local landfill, operates six engines with a combined capacity of 1.6 MWh. This facility is essential for meeting 30% of the energy needs for public buildings, including municipal hospitals and schools. By generating energy credits, São José is able to directly offset its energy costs, enhancing the effective utilization of public funds and demonstrating a model of successful municipal energy management.
In addition to financial benefits, the project contributes to sustainability goals by decreasing methane emissions from landfill waste. These efforts not only reflect São José's dedication to reducing its environmental footprint but also serve as a compelling example for other municipalities looking to innovate in the realm of renewable energy and efficient resource management.
