In Latvia, an epidemiological investigation has uncovered several laboratory-confirmed cases of measles. The Disease Prevention and Control Centre (SPKC) reported that one of the infected individuals traveled on an Ecolines bus on the Riga-Gulbene-Riga route. Specifically, this person took a bus from Riga to Gulbene on March 13 and returned to Riga on March 15. The SPKC is urging all passengers on these specific bus journeys to reach out to their epidemiologists in order to assess potential infection risks and obtain further health advice.

The SPKC has highlighted the highly contagious nature of measles, which primarily spreads through airborne droplets that can linger in indoor air. This transmission method means that individuals may contract the disease not just through direct contact with an infected person, but also by being in the same closed environment. Given the nature of city bus travel, the risk of transmission could extend considerably, especially in public transport settings where people are in close proximity.

As measles continues to pose a significant public health risk, the SPKC's call to action emphasizes the importance of community engagement in health safety measures.
