220 Nigerians studying in UK under presidential amnesty programme – FG

About 220 Nigerians are studying in the UK as part of a presidential amnesty programme, according to Nigeria's Minister of Information.

The Nigerian Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, recently announced that around 220 Nigerians are studying in the United Kingdom under the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP). This disclosure was made during a meeting held for beneficiaries of the programme, coinciding with President Bola Tinubu's official visit to Britain, invited by King Charles III. The Minister emphasized the importance of educational opportunities for these students and how the government is supporting them in their academic pursuits abroad.

PAP, which was established in 2009 by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, aims to mitigate militancy in the Niger Delta region by disarming and rehabilitating former agitators. Over the years, the programme has shifted its focus towards providing skills training, education, and various empowerment projects. Its evolution underscores the Nigerian government’s commitment to fostering peace and promoting development in this resource-rich area, which has historically faced instability.

During his meeting with the students, Idris expressed satisfaction with the progress made under the programme and reaffirmed the government's dedication to investing in the future of Nigerian youth. The involvement of other officials like the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, highlights the collaborative effort required to implement such initiatives. This gathering not only showcases the beneficiaries' potential in contributing to national development but also emphasizes the necessity of educational development in achieving sustainable peace and growth in Nigeria’s complex socio-economic landscape.
