Nigeria and the United Kingdom have formalized a significant agreement that focuses on enhancing migration control through the deportation of failed asylum seekers, foreign national offenders, and visa overstayers. This agreement was signed during a state visit by President Bola Tinubu to the UK, featuring key representatives such as Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood. This partnership signifies a mutual commitment to address issues related to illegal migration and criminal activities involving foreign nationals.

The new arrangement allows the UK to swiftly return individuals lacking legal residency, thereby easing the process for deporting failed asylum seekers and other migrants who have overstayed their visas. Importantly, the agreement introduces a provision that enables Nigeria to accept alternative identification documents, specifically “UK letters,” for the first time. This modification could streamline the identification and repatriation of individuals without valid passports, which is often a significant hurdle in the deportation process.

This agreement not only emphasizes tighter migration enforcement but also highlights the deepening bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK.
