A convoy of 12 ambulances leaves Helsinki for Ukraine - one donated vehicle saves dozens of lives each month

A charity organization is sending 12 ambulances from Helsinki to Ukraine to assist with ongoing humanitarian needs amidst the war.

On Wednesday, 12 ambulances were parked at Narinkkatori in Helsinki as part of a notable charity initiative led by the Lions organization. This event is not a typical emergency response but rather a humanitarian effort to provide much-needed medical transport to Ukraine, where the aftermath of the ongoing Russian invasion has created pressing demands for healthcare services. The ongoing war, now over four years old, necessitates continuous support to address the immediate and severe needs of the population.

The ambulances being sent are refurbished vehicles that have been decommissioned from Finnish emergency services, demonstrating the commitment to re-utilize resources for a critical cause. Jari Järvelä, the project leader, highlighted the significance of the ambulances, emphasizing the positive impact they can have in Ukraine. The vehicles will bolster the emergency medical response in areas deeply affected by the conflict, where existing healthcare resources are often insufficient or overstressed due to continuous hostilities.

In addition to providing transportation, the initiative also acknowledges the competence of Ukrainians in maintaining and repairing these vehicles. Järvelä pointed out that while the ambulances may be older models, the local teams are resourceful in fixing them when necessary, utilizing spare parts effectively. This capability ensures that the delivered vehicles will remain operational, thus enabling them to save lives on an ongoing basis. The project exemplifies international solidarity and the importance of humanitarian support in conflict zones.
