"Something is smoking, the doors are open": a frightening sight at the "Viada" gas station

A perceived fire hazard at a gas station in Dotnuva, Lithuania, turned out to be a false alarm triggered by smoke detectors.

On March 17, at 9:06 AM, the Kaunas Fire Rescue Department received a call reporting smoke at the "Viada" gas station located on Tilto Street in the Dotnuva town of Kedainiai district. Firefighters responded to the scene but found no signs of a fire. It turned out that the incident was caused by the activation of the gas station's anti-theft smoke alarm due to the opening of a fuel reservoir.

According to the police from the Kaunas region, there were no indications of theft or any criminal activity associated with the reported incident. The smoke alarm, which is designed to deter theft, accidentally went off, leading to the chain of events. The police were informed about the gas station situation as well but determined that their intervention was unnecessary once the details were clarified.

The situation highlights the importance of effective emergency response protocols and the role of alarm systems in ensuring safety at gas stations. While the incident caused some alarm, it ultimately underscores the significance of quickly ascertaining facts to prevent unnecessary panic and police involvement in such false alarms.
