See – an important component of the 5th unit has arrived at the Kruonis HAE
The arrival of a crucial component for the fifth unit at Kruonis Hydroelectric Pumped Storage Plant marks a significant step towards enhancing energy flexibility and integration of renewable resources in Lithuania.
The Kruonis Hydroelectric Pumped Storage Plant (HAE) in Lithuania, which has been operational since 1992 with its first four units, is currently set to expand its capabilities with the installation of a fifth unit. This facility is unique in the Baltic region as it not only generates electricity but also utilizes surplus energy to pump water to an upper reservoir. The new unit is expected to aid in better balancing energy price fluctuations and to integrate a greater share of green energy production into the grid.
Darius Maikštėnas, the head of 'Ignitis grupė,' highlighted the importance of this new unit in increasing the flexibility of the entire plant and enhancing balancing capabilities and reliability. As the energy sector shifts towards more renewable resources, the ability to manage fluctuations in energy generation becomes crucial, thereby supporting Lithuania's objectives in sustainable energy production. With the existing four units providing balancing services, the integration of the fifth unit will allow for greater capacity to accommodate renewable generation sources.
The construction of the fifth unit at Kruonis HAE represents a strategic project for 'Ignitis grupė,' with an investment of 150 million Euros. Currently, approximately 70% of the project has been realized over three years, with completion expected by the end of 2026. The successful establishment of this unit will not only bolster Lithuania's energy infrastructure but also contribute to its long-term energy goals, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and modern energy solutions.
