'Little by little, sales are reactivating': salted cod is offered from $ 6 per pound in Guayaquil as Holy Week approaches

In Guayaquil, the price of salted cod, essential for the traditional Easter dish fanesca, is currently between $6 and $10 per pound as sales begin to pick up ahead of Holy Week.

In the lead-up to Holy Week, markets in Guayaquil are witnessing a gradual increase in the availability and sales of salted cod, a key ingredient for the local dish known as fanesca. Prices for salted cod are varying between $7 and $10 per pound depending on the area and quality of the product, with other salted fish, such as lisa, picudo, albacora, and dorado, also contributing to the traditional offerings of the season. In the Mercado Oeste, for instance, vendor Israel Romero is selling salted cod at $7 per pound and is optimistic about increased sales as the holiday approaches.

Despite the product's availability, market activity has yet to reach its peak. Romero notes that sales are gradually reactivating, anticipating that the busiest shopping days will occur just before Holy Week. This sentiment is echoed among other vendors in the market, who are also preparing for a surge in demand as customers begin to stock up on ingredients for festive meals.

In addition to salted cod, the pricing for other fish like lisa varies based on size, ranging from $3.50 to $5, indicating a diverse selection in this festive season. As Guayaquil's markets gear up for Holy Week, vendors are hopeful that the trend of rising sales will continue, reflecting both cultural significance and economic activity surrounding traditional culinary practices.
