Gang suspected of dozens of frauds arrested in São José dos Campos, SP

A gang suspected of committing over 60 fraud cases in São Paulo was arrested in São José dos Campos.

On the afternoon of October 17, the Civil Police in Brazil arrested a criminal gang linked to more than 60 fraud cases across the state of São Paulo. The operation took place in São José dos Campos, where the gang members were apprehended following a tip-off from a local shopkeeper. The suspects, all young adults from Itapevi, have been operating these scams since 2023 across multiple municipalities, targeting businesses through deceptive offers of automatic door repair services.

The gang’s modus operandi involved offering repairs on automatic doors, during which they would remove crucial parts such as motors under the pretense of providing a quote. Once the equipment was taken from the victims, they would often fail to return the items, leaving the businesses at a loss. The police intervened after receiving reports of suspicious activities consistent with this scam, leading to the arrest of three individuals aged between 22 and 24, while one escaped during the police encounter.

This case highlights a growing issue of fraud in the region, as criminal groups exploit vulnerabilities within businesses and communities. With this arrest, local law enforcement aims to deter further fraudulent activities and reassure the public that efforts are being made to combat such crimes effectively. The incident underscores the importance of community awareness and quick reporting to police in preventing and addressing fraud-related offenses.
