Processing delayed by a week

The Reykjavík City Environmental and Planning Council has postponed the consideration of a building application for a café due to be operated by Samhjálp at Grensásvegur 46 for a week.

The Reykjavík City Environmental and Planning Council has delayed the discussion of a building permit application for a café to be operated by Samhjálp at the address Grensásvegur 46. Originally planned for a meeting today, the decision will now be postponed by one week. According to the application submitted by Samhjálp, the café is set to have a dining area on the ground floor with a capacity for up to 100 people, with a basement area designated for storage and staff lockers. However, it is important to note that the café will not have a kitchen for cooking, but will only be able to heat pre-prepared food.

Samhjálp, which currently operates a kitchen in Grafarvogur, has faced challenges regarding its current location for the café, which has been in Borgartún since 2007. Earlier this summer, it was reported that the lease for this space was terminated, and the organization will need to vacate the premises by October 2025. As a temporary measure, the café has been operating in the facilities of the Philadelphia Church at Hátún since October, providing a necessary service while searching for a more permanent solution.

The delay in discussing the new application highlights the ongoing struggle for many social service organizations to secure stable operational locations. The changes and uncertainty around this café reflect broader issues within the community regarding the accessibility of services for those in need. The decision from the council in the coming week will be pivotal for Samhjálp and will determine their ability to continue providing food services in the new proposed location.
