Rejecting the crematorium's demands for a license review

The Environmental and Natural Resource Committee has rejected the Reykjavik Health Inspectorate's decision to review a crematorium's operating license due to pollution concerns.

The Environment and Natural Resource Committee has declined a request from the Reykjavik Diocese, which manages a crematorium in Fossvogur, to review a decision made by the Reykjavik Health Inspectorate regarding the operating license for the facility. This crematorium, operational since 1948, had its license granted in June 2021, valid until 2033. However, in October 2024, the Health Inspectorate decided to review the license due to inadequate pollution protection measures and increased disturbances from smoke pollution. As a result of this review, significant changes were made to the crematorium's new license, including a reduction in the license's validity period from twelve years to one.
