Dog brought the skull of the missing Keijo to the backyard

The disappearance of 70-year-old Keijo Hämäläinen turned into a mystery when his skull was discovered by a dog in his backyard, leading to an ongoing investigation into his death.

The case of Keijo Hämäläinen, a 70-year-old man from Imatra, became a mystery after he was reported missing in early 2023 when family members could no longer contact him. Investigators were puzzled until a local dog unearthed Hämäläinen's skull and brought it to its owner's backyard on Halloween, October 28, 2023, in Kitee’s Kesälahti district, coinciding with the location of Hämäläinen's summer cottage. This discovery has reignited questions surrounding his disappearance and subsequent death.

Prior to the skull's discovery, there had been lingering suspicions regarding Hämäläinen's fate, as a neighbor had reported smelling a foul odor near their property the previous summer. However, the thick underbrush between the neighbor's property and Hämäläinen's summer cottage hindered visual access, making it difficult for authorities to investigate at the time. Later searches around the cabin uncovered additional evidence, including a shinbone, tattered clothing, and a mobile phone, which increased the urgency of the investigation into Hämäläinen's mysterious circumstances.

The focus of the investigation has now shifted to Hämäläinen's former school friend, 73, who was reportedly the last person known to have seen him alive. Authorities are delving deeper into the relationship between the two men and are exploring potential motives as they attempt to piece together the events that led to Hämäläinen's untimely death. This case highlights the challenges that investigators face in missing person cases, particularly those that remain unsolved for an extended period, and underscores the importance of community awareness and vigilance in aiding investigations.
