The drinking water in Visby is at risk of running out
Visby faces a severe drinking water shortage, with warnings that several areas could become waterless within three days unless consumption is drastically reduced.
Visby, located on the island of Gotland in Sweden, is in urgent need of a significant reduction in water consumption. The local authorities have issued warnings indicating that if consumption levels do not decrease, numerous towns could run out of potable water within the next three days. The situation arises from a combination of factors, including necessary cleaning of water reservoirs that has consumed large amounts of water and leaks caused by deep frost.
To mitigate the crisis, residents have been advised to restrict their use of tap water solely to essential purposes such as food preparation, drinking, and necessary hygiene, while also being warned against hoarding water. Patrik Johansson, head of the drinking water unit at Region Gotland, emphasized that increases in water consumption could lead to a rapid loss of pressure in the water system, worsening the situation further.
The areas particularly affected include Visby, Lummelunda, Brissund, Själsö, Väskinde, Vibble, Västerhejde, Tofta, and Västergarn, which are all reliant on the same water supply. The announcement brings attention to the broader issues of water management and the impact of seasonal conditions, which can lead to significant challenges in maintaining essential resources.
