Vessel Hits Rocks and Grounds in Amazon River; Passengers Are Rescued

A ferry vessel traveling from Manaus to São Gabriel da Cachoeira hit rocks and ran aground, but all passengers were safely rescued.

On the evening of Tuesday, October 17, a ferry traveling from Manaus to São Gabriel da Cachoeira in the Amazon region ran aground after colliding with rocks. The vessel was transporting passengers, vehicles, and goods when the incident occurred. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries among those on board, although videos recorded by passengers captured moments of panic as they were left in darkness without electricity aboard the ship.

Following the impact, the ferry drifted to a nearby beach, where the crew attempted to unload some of the cargo. Unfortunately, the vessel began to partially sink as the rescue efforts continued. The company responsible for the ferry service, Herdeiro de Deus Navegações, stated on social media that they took all necessary precautions to ensure the safe rescue of the passengers involved in the incident.

Passengers were ultimately rescued, and plans were made for them to disembark in São Gabriel da Cachoeira on the morning of Wednesday, October 18. Additionally, the Rede Amazônica outlet has contacted the Brazilian Navy to confirm whether an investigation has been initiated regarding the incident, highlighting the concerns for safety in the region’s waterways.
