Pilot says sudden wind, waves that hit boat, and crowd on bow caused shipwreck in Manaus
A pilot's testimony reveals that a shipwreck in Manaus was caused by sudden strong winds and overcrowding in the bow region of the boat.
The pilot of the charter boat Lima de Abreu XV testified to the Civil Police that the shipwreck near the Meeting of the Waters in Manaus was due to a sudden windstorm, with waves reaching up to three meters, combined with passenger movement to the front of the vessel. His statement was recorded after his arrest and has been obtained by G1 from the police.
The passenger boat, operated by Lima de Abreu Navegações, was en route from Manaus to Nova Olinda do Norte when the accident occurred. According to reports from firefighters, two people lost their lives, seven others are missing, and 71 individuals have been rescued. The investigation into the precise cause of the capsizing is still ongoing, as authorities seek to understand the contributing factors.
Following the rescue of survivors, the pilot, Pedro José da Silva Gama, was detained but later released on bail. He is expected to face charges of involuntary manslaughter, indicating that there was no intent to kill. In his account, he indicates that the incident occurred shortly after his arrival at the Yellow Barge at the Manaus Modern Port.
