Petrobras makes new gas discovery in exploratory well in Colombia

Petrobras announced the discovery of a new natural gas reserve in deep waters off the coast of Colombia, which could improve energy supply and support Brazil's energy transition.

On Wednesday, Petrobras confirmed a significant discovery of natural gas in the Copoazu-1 well located approximately 36 kilometers from the Colombian coast in deep water, reaching almost 1,000 meters in depth. This well is situated near two other important wells, Sirius-1 and Sirius-2, which are about 8 kilometers away, indicating the potential for a substantial gas field in the area. The strategic positioning of the well highlights Petrobras's ongoing efforts to expand its natural gas exploration initiatives.

The discovery comes at a crucial time when Brazil aims to reduce its dependency on energy imports, enhance energy supply sustainability, and transition toward cleaner energy sources. Petrobras emphasizes that this new reserve is expected to yield more gas than initially estimated, which could bolster energy security not only for Brazil but potentially for the broader region as well. Natural gas is considered a cleaner alternative for energy generation, playing a vital role in Brazil's energy transition strategy.

Drilling at the Copoazu-1 well commenced in November 2025 and continues to progress. The outcomes of this exploration could significantly affect energy policies and market dynamics in Brazil and Colombia, as Petrobras aims to leverage its natural gas resources to secure sustainable energy supplies and generate revenue while contributing to a greener energy landscape.
