The 'Guernica' in Virtual Reality: Paris Explores the History of Picasso's Famous Painting

The Picasso Museum in Paris presents a five-month virtual reality experience dedicated to Picasso's 'Guernica', tracing the journey of the painting from its commission to its installation in Madrid's Reina Sofía Museum.

The Picasso Museum in Paris is launching an immersive virtual reality experience called 'Las metamorfosis del Guernica' that runs for five months, starting from April 8th until September 6th. This innovative exhibit allows visitors to explore the creation process of 'Guernica' and its tumultuous journey, which includes its commission for the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 International Exposition in Paris, the devastation of Gernika that served as its inspiration, the Parisian studio where it was painted, and its eventual placement in the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid.

Created in collaboration with the French content production company Lucid Realties and the international arts technology program VIVE Arts, the exhibit features detailed reconstructions of historical contexts associated with 'Guernica'. Viewers can experience the atmosphere of the Spanish Pavilion at the Exposition of 1937, the reconstructive artwork reflecting the tragedy in Gernika after the bombing, and much more, contributing to a deeper understanding of Picasso's response to the atrocities of war through his art.

This project not only serves to celebrate a monumental piece of art history but also aims to engage a contemporary audience through technological innovation in the art world. It highlights how virtual reality can bridge past and present, ensuring that the historical significance of 'Guernica' remains relevant while also making the narrative accessible to a broader audience, including those who may not have the chance to visit the physical locations involved.
