Scam on the sand: police arrest suspect of fraud against tourists on the beaches of Zona Sul
Police arrested Renan Fiuza, a key suspect in a scam targeting tourists in Rio de Janeiro's Zona Sul beaches, following an ongoing investigation.
On Tuesday, police in Brazil arrested Renan Fiuza Silva dos Santos, a suspect implicated in a scheme defrauding tourists on Rio de Janeiro's famous Zona Sul beaches. The arrest was conducted by the Special Delegation for Tourism Support (Deat), which had an arrest warrant issued by the Justice of Rio de Janeiro for Fiuza, believed to be a significant member of a criminal organization known for executing the 'machine scam.' This scam particularly affected visitors in popular areas like Copacabana, Ipanema, and Arpoador.
According to police investigations, the group targeted tourists by luring them with offers of low-priced beverages, electronic cigarettes, flip-flops, and towels. Once the tourists were engaged, the scammers would manipulate card machines at the point of payment, leading to unsuspecting financial losses. Victims included individuals from various countries, such as France, Denmark, the United States, Serbia, Spain, and Chile, with reported losses in excess of R$ 60,000 collectively.
The arrest of Renan Fiuza represents a significant move by the authorities to combat tourist fraud in Rio de Janeiro, especially in high-traffic areas frequented by international visitors. The ongoing efforts by the Deat highlight the need for increased vigilance to protect tourists and ensure the integrity of the tourism experience in one of Brazil's most renowned cities.
