Sarin, 44, murderer of ex-husband released from prison

A man convicted of brutally murdering his ex-partner will be released on parole in 2027, having served over 15 years of his sentence.

A man who was convicted in 2011 for the brutal murder of his ex-partner, Sari Lehtonen, has been granted parole by the Helsinki Court of Appeals, allowing him to be released on March 18, 2027. The man has served approximately 15 and a half years of his sentence. The court noted that he has demonstrated a clean record during his incarceration, as well as his adaptation to open prison conditions and abstinence from substance abuse, as factors supporting his release.

The case received significant media attention when the murder occurred, as it was particularly gruesome. On September 15, 2011, the man killed Lehtonen by stabbing her multiple times in her car, followed by shooting her six times with a revolver, targeting her neck and chest. After the murder, the man attempted to cover up the crime by disposing of her body in Lake Päijänne, where it was discovered three days later, and he also set her car on fire in the woods, highlighting the premeditated nature of the crime.

The court has indicated that there is no apparent danger in releasing the man now, assessing that he has served a sufficient portion of his sentence and shown signs of rehabilitation. This ruling has raised concerns and discussions about the implications of releasing individuals convicted of serious crimes, particularly those involving domestic violence, and the system’s ability to ensure public safety after such violent acts.
