Man accused of killing ex-girlfriend with a knife out of jealousy is sentenced to 70 years in prison in SC

A man has been sentenced to over 70 years in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Mikaella Sagás, motivated by jealousy.

In a tragic case of femicide, a man has been sentenced to 70 years, 5 months, and 10 days in prison for the murder of 29-year-old esthetician Mikaella Sagás in Biguaçu, Brazil. The sentence was handed down by the Tribunal de Justiça (TJ) following a guilty verdict that highlighted the crime's roots in jealousy and the man's inability to cope with the end of their relationship. The jury's decision reflects the increasing legal actions against femicide in Brazil, addressing the severe consequences of domestic violence and gender-related crimes.

In addition to his murder conviction, the accused was also found guilty of aggravated theft, as he stole property from Sagás, including her car and cellphone, shortly after committing the crime. This aspect adds another layer of severity to the case, showcasing a blatant disregard for life and further victimization of women in situations of domestic violence. The initial act of violence was compounded by the theft, which points to a mindset of entitlement and control over the victim's possessions, even after her death.

The court's ruling also mandates a financial compensation of R$ 100,000, including additional interest, to Sagás's family, signifying an effort to provide some form of justice or closure to the victim's loved ones. Moreover, the convicted man is regarded as a repeat offender due to a previous robbery conviction, emphasizing the need for stricter measures in dealing with habitual offenders. The sentencing not only seeks to penalize the perpetrator but also serves as a deterrent against femicide and violence towards women within Brazilian society.
