240 kilometers without sleep: a hike from Šiauliai to Vilnius aims to highlight the 'elephant in the room'
A hiker is embarking on a non-stop journey from Šiauliai to Vilnius to raise awareness for autism and support children with autism spectrum disorders.
Starting on March 19 at 5 PM from Šiauliai's Prisikėlimo Square, Viktor Radajevas will embark on a nearly 240-kilometer hike to Vilnius's Cathedral Square, aiming to complete the journey in about two days. This hike is dedicated to children with autism, seeking to bring attention to the societal neglect regarding autism and its impacted children. The event hopes to raise awareness and encourage public donations to support autism initiatives.
The hike is not just a test of physical endurance; it is also a charity initiative in support of the Autizmo paramos fondas 'Pokyčių ambasada'. Participants and community members are encouraged to contribute 1.2% of their income tax to support autism-related causes, fostering a more inclusive environment for children. The initiative underlines the necessity of recognizing and valuing autistic children, who often possess remarkable talents and abilities.
Symbolizing this cause, a yellow elephant mascot will accompany Radajevas on his journey, representing the 'bringing of sunshine' to Vilnius. This gesture aims to visually remind observers of the urgent need to address autism and support affected families, challenging the stigma that often surrounds the neurodevelopmental disorder. The hike is expected to engage crowds, draw media attention, and spark conversations about autism in Lithuania, a topic that still receives limited focus in public discourse.
